Pollensa

Pollensa’s blonde stone houses, sunny town squares and dramatic mountainous backdrop are the stuff that Mediterranean dreams are made of. Yet despite its good looks, Pollensa isn’t just a tourist town, but one that celebrates its traditional culture – and you’re welcome to join in!

If you're into history, Pollensa has rich pickings. Explore the old town centre, walk across the ancient Roman bridge and, if you’re in town during the summer, catch one of the world's largest classical music festivals, set in and around a magnificent 16th century convent.

Add to this mountains, vineyards and incredibly photogenic beaches, and you’ve got a holiday of dreams. It’s no wonder that creatives and celebrities from Audrey Hepburn to Agatha Christie have felt the pull of this magical town.

It’s a short drive or cycle down to the coast from your holiday villa to the Bay of Pollensa, which has some of the best beaches on the island. Among the most popular is Platja del Port de Pollensa, a wide stretch of white sand and clear blue water and the added bonus of a dramatic mountain backdrop.

On the other side of the bay, Platja de Sa Font de Sant Joan is a quiet beach with excellent snorkelling, while just over the hill, Platja Es Morer Vermell is a shallow, sheltered bay that’s brilliant for kids.

If you like your beaches truly unspoilt, you’ll need to work to get there. Either take to the cliffside hiking trails to find your own patch of paradise or hire a boat for the day and anchor in a deserted bay.

There’s no shortage of fun activities near your Pollensa holiday rental. Start with exploring honey-coloured streets of the Old Town. As well as soaking up the atmosphere of the ancient streets, you can browse boutiques, visit museums and join the locals at pavement cafes.

Not had your fill of history yet? Make your way to the fascinating Roman ruins of Pollentia and its onsite museum. Once the capital of Mallorca, these crumbling remains include an amphitheatre and forum.

If you get your kicks from the outdoors, the surrounding landscape is rugged, beautiful and made for hiking and biking. Head up into the hills or along the coast to make the most of the jaw-dropping views. You’ll find villages, vineyards and beautiful beaches to break up your journey.

Wandering the historic streets of Pollensa is a joy. You’ll find all sorts of quirky trinkets to take back to your Pollensa villa, from leather goods to textiles to jewellery.

Fancy shopping with a local flavour? The Sunday market brings traders from across Mallorca to sell flowers, fresh vegetables, handicrafts and books, as well as tasty street food that can be eaten as you wander.

For a slicker shopping experience, head to Alcudia where designer boutiques and fancy food stores will satisfy all your high-end cravings.

You’ll find plenty of delicious local produce to cook up a feast at your holiday home. The town’s delis, supermarkets and weekly market offer fabulously fresh vegetables, fish and meat, as well as gourmet treats such as local cheese, cured meats and olives.

Dining out in Pollensa is an experience not to be missed. You can eat fancy creations or traditional Mallorcan fare in the atmospheric surroundings of the Old Town, or head down to Pollensa’s port to eat seafood with a view of the marina or the beach. Go for the catch of the day or try some bargain lobster - it’s famously good in the Balearics!

If you’re not a fan of seafood, never fear. There are plenty of meaty options too, with locally reared lamb and pork particularly good.
