Calella de Palafrugell

Calella de Palafrugell is a quintessential Mediterranean idyll. Whitewashed buildings cluster around crystal clear coves; colourful fishing boats line golden sands and there’s a hinterland lush with greenery and scattered with architectural treasures.

Book a holiday home in Calella de Palafrugell and you’ll have ample time to spend by the ocean. There are dazzling beaches, both lively and secluded, plus a charming harbour, where you can hire a boat for the day, or sit back, relax and sample fish pulled fresh from the water that morning.

Want to head further afield? There are coastal paths to explore, archaeological sites to discover and one of the best botanical gardens in the country.

Your Calella de Palafrugell holiday villa puts you close to a clutch of pretty beaches, connected by a path that’s part of the Camino de Ronda hiking trail. Port Bo Beach sits next to the whitewashed harbour and has ample facilities to keep you busy all day, as well as clear waters and vibrant marine life for snorkelers and divers.

If you’re up for a hike, follow the path to wild Cala del Golfet. One of the best beaches on the Costa Brava, it’s backed by red rock cliffs and sits just below the Cap Roig Botanical Garden. You’ll want to spend several hours swimming and gazing out towards the Formigues Islands, so make sure to bring a picnic!

Travelling as a family? The soft sand and shallow waters of Malaspina Beach are ideal for young children - as are the surrounding cafes and ice cream stalls!

Whether you want to spend time by the ocean or get out and explore the countryside, a villa in Calella de Palafrugell is the perfect base. The Camino de Ronda hiking trail hugs the coastline, making it easy to walk from beach to beach, taking in jaw-dropping views as you go.

Cap Roig Botanical Garden is a magical patch of cliffside greenery, displaying plants and flowers from all over the world. Come in peak summer and you can listen to live music underneath the stars at the annual Cap Roig Festival.

To get that culture fix, head to Sant Sebastián de la Guarda for some archaeological exploration. An ancient Iberian village, it has buildings dating back as far as the 6th century BC.

You didn't come here for the shopping but if you need a souvenir or two, you’ll find several stores near your Calella de Palafrugell villa rental, as well as a street market that’s great for wandering and picking up foodie gifts.

Four kilometres inland, the medieval town of Palafrugell has a wider selection, including high street clothes and bookshops. For chic boutiques and quirky homewares, get down to nearby Begur for some serious browsing.

Calella de Palafrugell isn’t the place for fry-ups and fish and chips. Instead, you’ll find tapas bars and family-run tavernas serving catch of the day - best enjoyed overlooking the waves. Unsure what to try? How about sea urchin, octopus braised with paprika or black rice cooked with squid and clams?

Things are quiet in the early evening so head out after 8pm to soak up the bustle of the promenade. If you want to dress up and hit a fancy restaurant, nearby Begur will oblige, while Girona offers everything from high-end Michelin-starred dining to organic vegan cafes.

You’ll find all the ingredients for a home-cooked meal at your rental villa at nearby supermarkets and the weekly market. In need of a pudding? Calella de Palafrugell’s very own ice cream parlour has dozens of flavours to try!

There’s no shortage of family-friendly villas in Calella de Palafrugell. Many have private swimming pools and large gardens so there’s plenty to entertain the kids if you want to spend the day at home.  The sea around Calella de Palafrugell is clear and calm, so it’s equally suited to paddling toddlers and sports-mad teenagers. For further flung exploration, hire a boat and a skipper and sail from cove to cove, preferably with a picnic and a plan to watch the sunset! For an adventure on land, follow the Camino de Ronda on foot or by bike, stopping for breathtaking views and refreshing swims. And spice things up for the kids with tales of the pirates that used to plunder these shores.
