Nearby Villages and Towns:

Tuscany is a region of Italy and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy with Florence as its capital. It is clear to see why Tuscany is such a popular tourist spot with its beautiful scenery of rolling hills, stunning valleys and small villages, the extensive art collections, gastronomy, wine and olive oil production and so much more. The only problem you may encounter is knowing where to start with so much on offer and you will find yourself wanting to return again and again. Tuscany benefits from a typically Mediterranean climate with warm sunny days throughout the summer, with temperature reaching 30 degrees in the summer months of July and August. Tuscany offers the perfect climate to while away the days by the pool with a drink in hand soaking up the sun or on a beach. For those who wish to indulge in some of the cultural activities that are provided in the region, of which there are many, why not take a visit to nearby Florence with its fabulous selection of art galleries and museums, or Pisa to visit the renowned Leaning Tower or Siena to take a walk along the medieval streets and main square. Getting to Tuscany could not be easier, with low cost airlines flying into Pisa International Airport (Aeroporto Galileo Galilei) from where it is easy to reach the various provinces of Tuscany by car. Pisa Airport is situated near to the coast and is approximately only 10 minutes by car to Pisa Centre, 20 minutes to Livorno, 30 minutes to Lucca and Viareggio and 45 minutes to Florence. There are bus and taxi services available at the airport that service nearby towns and car hire is also available for those who wish to have more flexibility and freedom. Pisa is the historic town that is located by the Arno River that is the home to the well known and architecturally inspiring Leaning Tower. The Campo dei Miracoli is one of the main draws of Pisa, where alongside the Leaning Tower, you will also find other monuments including the catherdral and some museums containing art and sculpture. The area is clearly extremely popular with tourists and is a must see attraction; the area surrounding the Leaning Tower is always busy with many striking the synonymous pose of attempting to `hold up` the tower. Along the streets that lead away from the Campo dei Miracoli are many restaurants, cafes, bars and shop that are very busy offering light refreshments to the crowds that gather here. Florence (Firenze) is the capital of Tuscany and is another extremely popular destination for visitors from around the globe. Situated on the Arno River and easily accessible by train and bus, Florence is well worth a visit. During the summer, Florence can be extremely crowded and hot teeming with tourists all in search of a similar cultural experience, so it can be nice after a day visiting Florence to escape the crowds and head out to a villa or apartment located in the smaller towns of the region. There is a vast array of places to see including the Ponte Vecchio the famous bridge with many shops, The Uffizzi Gallery with wonderful masterpieces from fine Italian artists, the Duomo, the iconic Michelangeo`s statue of David and so much more. With so many places to visit and things to see, one day may not be enough. Siena is a well preserved medieval town in Tuscany that is another popular destination for tourists to visit. Siena hosts an annual horse racing event (Palio) that takes place in the main square Il Campo. The Palazzo del Campo is the main square in Siena which slopes down to the entrance of the Palazzo Pubblico which is home to the Museo Civico. The square is lined with restaurants, bars and cafes where you can sit and enjoy a pizza, a drink or an ice cream whilst observing the crowds that gather in the square. Leading off the square are a maze of cobbled medieval streets and other piazzas filled with shops so that the shopping fanatics can get their fix of retail therapy. The Tuscan countryside offers magnificent sceneries of rolling hills, valleys and fields of sunflowers that it almost feels like you are standing in a painting. Tuscany does not just offer countryside scenery, but for the sea lovers you can head to the coast and visit the coastal towns of Viareggio and the more upmarket Forte dei Marmi. Viareggio is a seaside resort with a long promenade packed with shops, cafes, restaurants and bars and a canal where you can often find small fishing boats selling freshly caught fish. Viareggio has a long stretch of sandy beach, much of which is privately owned concessions where visitors can buy a day ticket to make use of the beach and facilities. Slightly further along the coast is the upmarket Forte dei Marmi where you will find many high end designer shops and restaurants. Parts of the beach at Forte dei Marmi are privately owned by beach clubs where sun lovers can relax in complete luxury with the excellent facilities offered by these clubs. Well worth a visit and located just outside the Tuscan boarders in the Liguria region is the stunning Portovenere and the Cinque Terre (meaning the `Five Lands`) Heading north of the large stretch of Tuscan coast, the coast becomes more rugged and you will find the enchanting towns dotted along the coastline west of La Spezia. The Cinque Terre includes Monterosso al Mare, Venazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore and are beautiful small towns that are linked by a train. The Cinque Terre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Portovenere is a beautiful seaside town with ancient castle and the Church of St. Peter, fabulous views of the sea, harbour, tall multi-coloured towering houses, large choice of restaurants and fabulous cobbled streets filled with delightful small shops and restaurants. Definitely worth visits to these beautiful towns that are in easy reach if you are staying in Tuscany.
Tuscany is also famous for its gastronomy and there will be no shortage of restaurants to visit and taste. You will also be able to buy and taste locally produced wine, olive oil and truffles; tours are common in this area and can be arranged. For those who do not just want to taste the Tuscan cuisine but learn for themselves how to produce it, cookery courses take place regularly and can also be organised on request. With so much to do and see in the region of Tuscany, you will find yourself falling in love with the region as you learn more about the local culture and traditions and will find yourself returning again and again.
